Fairies in the field!!

Took Sam for a walk yesterday and this is what met me in the field behind us!!  I wonder if they are edible and if so, should we cook them up for breakfast?  Forage food? Let me know on info@thesteppeshereford.co.uk

Catalpa Aurea!

That’s Indian Bean Tree to you and me!!  We purchased a little whip of a tree about 12 years ago and popped it into the centre of our Hornbeam circle here at Steppes B&B.  Just look at it this year – the flowers are amazing and the beans will be about 8 inches long later in the season.  We have created a small seating area within the Hornbeam circle which has a very calming atmosphere.

Come along and enjoy the vibe and stay with us for a couple of days and if the timing is right you can take home some beans to grow your own Catalpa Aurea!  Our Indian Bean Tree isn’t the only unusual specimen in Herefordshire, there are plenty of other fantastic gardens to explore such as Hampton Court, near Leominster. http://www.hamptoncourt.org.uk

Meet our new cat, Jeffers!

Jeffers came to us in December last year, after sadly losing our black moggy, Gemma.  She was (we think) about 22 years old so was due a well earned rest in cat heaven.  As we live in a really old property, a cat is pretty much an essential, so off to the Cats Protection home in Allensmore, Herefordshire, we went to find a couple of new cats.

We met many beautiful specimens, but Jeffers was the only one to come up to me and lick my hand – obviously recognising a kindred spirit!!  He was the one!!  His owner had died and we now think he was possibly a house cat, because he was not in the least worried about being kept in the house for a few weeks!

Anyway, he has made himself completely at home as you can see!

Come along to The Steppes, and meet Jeffers – he will stand any amount of fussing!

A weekend of fun at Eastor Castle

Last weekend was a blast, certainly for those of a certain age!!  Went to the Cliff Richard concert on the Saturday evening, followed by Michael Ball and Alfie Boe on the Sunday evening.  The weather was scorching on both nights so iced coffees and ice creams all round.

Cliff certainly hasn’t lost his voice – he was on great form and Michael Ball and Alfie Boe were really entertaining and kept us enthralled all evening.

Eastnor Castle have lots of fantastic events so keep an eye on their website for future events and then you can come to stay with us for the duration!  http://www.eastnorcastle.com

Emma Bridgewater in the breakfast room!

We decided that our breakfast room needed a little lift after serving us very well for six years, so invited Emma Bridgewater into our lives by hanging new blinds at the windows, and lining our dresser with a complimentary fabic, again by Emma Bridgewater.  What do you think?  Better still, visit us and tell us in person!!

Thanks Hotels.com

This was a pleasant surprise in this morning’s post.  Thank you very much Hotels.com for recognising us as “outstanding”!!  We really appreciate the accolade and look forward to welcoming many more folks to our B&B in 2015.  Just give us a ring or book online.

Tomorrow’s breakfast special

Tomorrow’s featured bread just out of the Aga and cooling down, ready for breakfast in the morning.  Yum Yum  – better book your room soon otherwise I will eat the lot!!  The smell of fresh baked bread is irresistable?

New look for the breakfast room!

Saw this wonderful settle at OldStuff’s Barn Antiques in Bishops Frome and thought “I know just the spot for that little beauty” – and here it is.  Pride of place in our breakfast room.
